Thanks for the comment. Program doesn't matter too much to start, unless you plan on going pro. In which case, try maya or Max. (I prefer C4D, but not too many studios use it.)
Beyond that, they are all pretty comparable for basic stuff. I'd recommend C4D for hobbiests, as it's cheaper and has a more intuitive workspace than maya does. Maya is powerful, but expensive, max looks cheap, but to get full functionality will kill your pocket.
If your patient, you might go with blender too. It's powerful and free, but don't expect to learn it overnight. (Or ever get a job using it.)
More important than software is training. Get any program, and join one of the forums. (3dtotal is my fav, but there's cgnation, and a bunch of others.) This will give you hundreds of hours of free training, plus a community willing to help you improve. It's a long haul, a cubic butt-ton of work, but it is sort of rewarding at the middle.
